The School of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) hosted a special event on December 8 at the University Student Innovation and Entrepreneurship Center, located in the Teaching Building No. 2 of Peking University. Over 100 undergraduate students from the College of Engineering, College of Chemistry and Molecular Engineering, and Yuanpei College participated in the event.
Under the theme “Enjoy Afternoon Tea and Talk About Materials+”, this eventinvited esteemed guests including Professor Zhan Xiaowei, Professor Cao Anyuan, Professor Mo Fanyang, Professor Zhang Qing, Researcher Dou Jinhu, Researcher LvShixian, Researcher Luo Mingchuan, and Researcher Gao Xin from MSE. They engaged in lively discussions with students on topics that students were concerned about, including curriculums, further education opportunities, and career prospects. The aim was to deepen students’ understanding of the MSE and the discipline of materials science and help them choose future careers. Dou Jinhu, a specially appointed researcher from the MSE, kicked off the event as the host, providing a comprehensive overview of MSE and this event, covering topics ranging from “the practical applications of materials, the content of materials science, and thestrong support provided by MSEfor their learning, further education and careers.”

Major Introduction.
During the Tea Time session that followed, teachers from MSE engaged in face-to-face discussions with students, creating a lively atmosphere. The teachers addressed questions based on their individual research areas and academic backgrounds, which effectively enhanced students’ understanding and interest in materials disciplines. Despite the harsh winter weather, the event exuded vibrancy as students delved into discussions with faculty of MSE on topics ranging from major selection to course arrangements and future plans, resulting in a rewarding experience for all involved.

In the “materials talk” session, Dr. Mo Fanyang made apresentation titled“Evolution of Scientific Research Paradigm and Its Thought”; Prof. Zhan Xiaowei then captivated the audience with his exploration of organic optoelectronic materials and devices, emphasizing their potential applications in fields such as information technology, healthcare, and energy. Prof. Zhan Xiaowei introduced his course“Literature Research and Scientific and Technical Writing of Science and Technology Major”. Additionally, Prof. Cao Anyuan sharedhisinsights from the realm of carbon materials, underlining the pivotal role of nanotechnology in discovering novel materials and applications. He showed the studentsvarious nanomaterials prepared in the laboratory to illustrate his points. Prof. Zhang Qing shared the research results of her research group dedicated to semiconductor optical materials and light-emitting devices, and introduced her core required course “Materials Physics”. Dr. Lv Shixian introduced the application of medical polymer materials in medical treatment to the students. He extended a warm invitation to students to join MSE, encouraging them to explore the boundless potential of biopolymer materials in enhancing life and health. Dr. Luo Mingchuan vividly extended the concept of electrochemistry, electochemist A. H.Frumkin and Mr. A.N and their achievements based on his past study and research experience. Dr. Gao Xin showed the students the research direction and main research work of advanced carbon-based nanomaterials and energy chemistry, and vividly explained the developmentand working principleof lithium-sulfur batteries through a“romantic love story”. Finally, Dr. Dou Jinhumade a speech with the title“The Charm ofIntersection-Research—Starting from the Nitrogen Acceleration of Karting”. He introduced the original intention and teaching outline of the “Interdisciplinary Science Experiment” course, aimed at cultivating interdisciplinary thinking among undergraduate students, which received enthusiastic applauseand comments.

During this semester, the “Engineering Carnival—Materials Discipline SpecialEvent” for new undergraduates was a resounding success, marking a significant milestone in the growing influence of the materials discipline. The event provided a platform for students to engage in meaningful communication and learning opportunities. During the event, students and faculty gathered and talked about the infinite future of materials science. On the day of the event, it coincides with the solar term Major Snow. With warmth in heart, there is no cold road ahead. We willwork together in the future and let our youth bloom with brilliant flowers!
