2023 is Peking University's “Going International Year” and the 10thanniversary of President Xi Jinping’s initiation of the “Belt and Road”initiative.
As a pioneer in the construction of“New Engineering Disciplines”at Peking University, the School of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) is actively engaged in the "Belt and Road" initiative and the “Going International” plan. From December 5th to 8th, 2023, Assistant Dean Lei Ting led the delegation of MSE to visit 9 universities and alumni associations in Malaysia, Vietnam, Thailand and other places for exchanges.
On the morning of December 5th, Lei Ting and the delegation visited the University of Malaya and engaged in discussions with representatives from the Faculty of Engineering, the Faculty of Science, and the International Relations Center. Both Peking University and the University of Malaya are members of the Asian Universities Alliance (AUA), laying a solid foundation for collaboration. This visit aims to promote academic cooperation and student exchanges between materials-related disciplines and departments.

On the afternoon of December 5th, Lei Ting and the delegation visited the Kuala Lumpur campus of Multimedia University, Malaysia, to learn about the university’s history. They visited its modern laboratories and multimedia teaching facilities. Afterwards, they were graciously hosted by the Peking University Alumni Association of Malaysia and learned about the important role played by the Alumni Association in promoting cultural and academic exchanges between China and Malaysia.

On the morning of December 6th, Lei Ting and the delegation visited the National University of Malaysia, engaging in discussions with representatives from the Faculty of Engineering, the Faculty of Science, and the Center for International Affairs and Cooperation regarding academic and student exchanges. Later that afternoon, they visited Technical University of Malaysia, Malacca, and communicated with their representatives. They had in-depth discussions on talent training and collaboration in academic research.

On December 7th, Lei Ting and the delegation arrived in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, and visited Vietnam National University (Ho Chi Minh City), Ho Chi Minh University of Science, and Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology. During their visits, they also conducted enrollment propagandas. Both parties expressed their anticipation for future collaboration in enrollment, scientific research, and other areas.

On the morning of December 8th, Lei Ting and the delegation arrived in Bangkok, Thailand, and visited Chulalongkorn University. The two universities played an active role in promoting friendly cooperation between China and Thailand and fostering academic exchanges in materials science. Additionally, the delegation visited the Confucius Institute at Chulalongkorn University. The discussions between them centered on exploring collaboration and exchange models between science and engineering departments to drive scientific and technological innovation. They expressed their eagerness to strengthen cooperation and actively advance the development of materials disciplines in both countries.

In the afternoon of the same day, Lei Ting and the delegation visited Mahidol University. They reviewed the years of exchanges and cooperation between Peking University and Mahidol University, and expressed mutual aspirations to further enhance academic cooperation and student exchanges in the field of advanced materials. Subsequently, the delegation met with Li Renliang, the executive president of the Peking University Alumni Association of Thailand. They had in-depth exchanges with the board members on the development of the alumni association.

This visit marks a successful initiative by Peking University’s “New Engineering Disciplines” to engage in international exchanges and cooperation within Southeast Asia. It has also established a solid groundwork for the overseas enrollment of MSE. Moving forward, MSE will actively foster collaboration and exchanges with universities in Southeast Asia through talent exchange programs, international research partnerships, academic conferences, and more. These efforts aim to cultivate talents capable of contributing to the construction of the “Belt and Road” initiative through cross-cultural exchanges.
